YouTube’s 500-Subscriber Tier: Fan Funding and Shopping Explained
Last updated: 31 August 2026. All figures come from YouTube’s own help documentation, linked at the bottom.
Most creators think there is one door into the YouTube Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours. There are two, and the second one opens at 500 subscribers.
It gets less attention because it does not include ad revenue, which is what everyone is chasing. But it is a real tier with real earnings attached, and for a lot of small channels it is reachable this year rather than next.
The requirements
You need 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and then one of two engagement thresholds:
- 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, or
- 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days
Same as the full programme, the two routes are alternatives. You need one, not both.
| 500 tier | Full YPP | |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribers | 500 | 1,000 |
| Recent uploads | 3 public in last 90 days | Not required |
| Watch hours route | 3,000 in 12 months | 4,000 in 12 months |
| Shorts route | 3 million in 90 days | 10 million in 90 days |
| Ad revenue | No | Yes |
| Fan funding | Yes | Yes |
| Shopping | Yes | Yes |
The requirement almost everyone misses
Look at the second row again. Three valid public uploads in the last 90 days.
This condition does not exist at the 1,000-subscriber tier, and it catches people out. A channel that hit 500 subscribers and 3,000 watch hours a year ago, then went quiet, does not qualify. The thresholds are met and the application still fails.
It is an activity requirement, not a size requirement. If you are close and have not posted in three months, post before you apply.
What you get
Joining at 500 unlocks the fan funding and commerce side of the programme:
- Channel memberships, a paid monthly subscription to your channel
- Super Chat and Super Stickers, paid highlighted messages during live streams
- Super Thanks, one-off tips on regular videos
- Jewels and gifts
- Shopping, including product tagging and selling your own merchandise
What you do not get
Ad revenue. That is the whole difference, and it is a big one. No pre-roll, no mid-roll, no share of YouTube Premium revenue. Those stay behind the 1,000-subscriber threshold with 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views.
So the 500 tier is not a smaller version of monetization. It is a different kind of it. At this level your income comes directly from your viewers rather than from advertisers.
Is it worth joining at 500?
Honestly, it depends on one thing: whether your audience is the kind that pays.
Fan funding rewards attachment, not size. A channel with 500 subscribers in a narrow niche, where people watch every video and turn up to live streams, can earn from memberships. A channel with 500 subscribers who arrived from one video the algorithm pushed and never came back will earn close to nothing, because nobody pays a channel they barely watch.
Two practical reasons to join anyway:
It costs nothing. There is no downside to being in the programme. If nobody uses the features, you have lost nothing but an afternoon of setup.
It gets the account work out of the way. Joining requires an AdSense account, 2-Step Verification, no active Community Guidelines strikes and an eligible country. All of that has to be sorted eventually. Doing it at 500 means that when you reach the full thresholds, the paperwork is already done.
You do not start over when you upgrade. Reaching the higher thresholds unlocks the ad revenue module on the same account.
Does the 2027 change affect this tier?
No, and this is worth saying clearly because it is being confused with the wider change.
The thresholds doubling on 1 February 2027, from 4,000 to 8,000 watch hours and from 10 million to 20 million Shorts views, apply to the ad revenue tier. YouTube’s announcement states that the entry thresholds for fan funding and shopping products remain unchanged, and the help documentation for this tier shows no 2027 change.
Which makes the 500 tier relatively more attractive from next February. The gap between the two doors is about to get wider. The full picture of what is changing is in our page on the 2027 Partner Program changes.
Before you apply
- Check you have posted three public videos in the last 90 days. This is the one people forget.
- Confirm your watch hours actually qualify. Shorts views do not count towards watch hours, and deleted or unlisted videos take their hours with them. The details are in our page on how the requirements are counted.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification and make sure you have one active AdSense for YouTube account.
- Check you have no active Community Guidelines strikes. Applying with one is a wasted application.
